Ziyaarah Of The Prophet ﷺ

“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

Ziyaarah means to visit the blessed grave of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues Of Ziyaarah

“Whoever visits me and has no other motive, has a right over me that I intercede on his behalf.” [Tabrani]

“ Whoever visits me after my death is like he who had visited me during my life. And whoever passes away in either of the two Harams, will be resurrected from among the ones given safety on the Day of Resurrection.” [Reported by Daar Qutni (r)]

“Whoever undertakes a journey specially to visit me, will be my neighbour on the Day of Judgement.” [Bayhaqi]

Entering Masjid- An-Nabawi

•After performing ghusl or at least wudhu, with utmost humility, whilst reciting durood shareef, enter Masjid-An-Nabawi.

•Enter with your right foot reciting:

بِسْمِ اللهِ والصَّلاةُ والسَّلامُ عَلٰى رَسُوْلِ اللهِ اللّٰهُمَّ افْتَحْ لَيْ اَبْوابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Bismillaahi wassalaatu wassalaamu alaa rasoolillaah. Allaahummaftah lee abwaaba rahmatik

“In the name of Allah. May the Peace and Salutations (of Allah) be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the doors of Your Mercies”.

The Rawdha

After Salaah or in your allocated time slot, proceed towards the Rawdha. This is the part of the masjid which lies between the holy grave of the Prophet ﷺ & the mimbar. The Prophet ﷺ has said: “Between my grave & my mimbar lies one of the gardens (rawdha) of paradise”.

Take a few moments to comprehend where you are, you are on a piece of Jannah on the earth. Make the most of it! Make it special between you & your lord. One would be foolish to waste their time showing the world or taking selfies.

One should spend these precious moments at the Rawdha in offering nafl salaah, du’aa, Tasbeeh, seeking repentance, reciting Quran, durood etc. However do bear in mind that you may not be able to stay here for too long.

Scholar have mentioned that one should start off with performing 2 rak’ah Salatul-Shukr (prayer of gratitude) for the opportunity to spend some time in this blessed place & with the great favour of the Ziyarah of our Nabi ﷺ.

The grave of our Nabi ﷺ

After the Rawdha, proceed towards the holy grave of Nabi ﷺ. Again, bear in mind who you are walking towards. Walk with extreme humility, with durood shareef flowing from the lips. Make this moment special! Don’t make it about taking your phones out to show the world.

Stand facing the grave (your back will be towards qiblah). Do not prostrate before the grave or kiss the wire mesh enclosure. Being completely present & aware that the final & most beloved Nabi of Allah ﷺ is aware of your presence & can hear you, make salaam in a moderate tone.

aşşalātu wassalāmu ‘alayka yā rasūlallāh

Peace and salutation be upon you O Messenger of Allah.

aşşalātu wassalāmu ‘alayka ya nabiyyallāh

Peace and salutation be upon you O Prophet of Allah.

aşşalātu wassalāmu ‘alayka ya habīballāh

Peace and salutation be upon you O Beloved of Allah.

aşşalātu wassalāmu ‘alayka yā khātamal ambiya

Peace and salutation be upon you O Final Prophet

assalāmu ‘alayka ayyuhan nabiyyu warahmatullahi wa barakatuh ash hadu alla ilaha illal labu wa annaka abduhu warasuluh.

Peace be upon you O Prophet and Mercy of Allah and His Blessings. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship besides Allah and I bear witness that you are His servant and Messenger.

The minimum words of Salaam is:

الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ الله

• Shaykh-al-Hadith Mawlānā Zakariyya writes: “I personally feel that a visitor to the holy grave should at every visit recite seventy times with complete humility:

الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ الله

• One may also convey the Salaam of family & friends in Arabic if they are able to do so or even in their own language. For example: “ Peace be upon you O of Allah from (insert name) He requests you to intercede to your Lord on his behalf” or “Peace be upon you O Messenger of Allah, from all those who had asked me to convey salam to you. They request you to intercede to your Lord on their behalf”.

After conveying Salaam, make du’aa to Allah ﷻ, through the wasilah (medium & intercession) of the Prophet ﷺ without raising the hands. Remember you are not making du’aa to the Prophet ﷺ. Ask for forgiveness for your sins, the sins of your parents, spouse, children, family, friends & the entire ummah. Ask for all your wishes in this world & the hereafter. Remember the entire ummah in your du’aas.

The graves of Hadhrat Abu Bakr (r.a) & Hadhrat Umar (r.a)

Now take a step to the right & convey your Salaam to Hadhrat Abu Bakr (r.a) saying:

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خَلِيفَةً رَسُولِ اللهِ جَزَاكَ اللهُ عَنْ أُمَّةٍ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Assalāmu ‘alayka ya khalifata rasulillah. jazākallahu ‘an ummati muhammad şallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam

Peace be upon you O Caliph of Rasûlullah. May Allah reward you well on behalf of the ummah of Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam.

Thereafter take another step to the right & convey your Salaam to Hadhrat Umar (r.a) saying:

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، جَزَاكَ اللهُ عَنْ امَّةٍ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Assalāmu ‘alayka ya amiral mu’minin jazākallahu ‘an ummati muhammad şallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam

Peace be upon you O Leader of the Believers. May Allah reward you well on behalf of the ummah of Muhammad şallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam.

Then face the Qiblah, raise your hands & make du’aa. Ask for forgiveness for your sins, the sins of your parents, spouse, children, family, friends & the entire ummah. Ask for all your wishes in this world & the hereafter. Remember the entire ummah in your du’aas.

Note: It is not permissible for menstruating women to enter Masjid- An-Nabawi. However they may still convey their salaam from the courtyard outside. One may even get the opportunity to get close to the green dome from outside & convey their salaam. (The Prophet ﷺ blessed grave lies directly beneath it).
