Umrah & Menstruation

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

• If possible, for ease, one should plan their umrah trip in a way that they will not be on their menses. One may also take the pill to delay their menses, however do be aware of side effects & spotting despite taking the pill. It may not work for everyone. If one spots during their menstruation days it will be regarded as her menses. Hence it is very important to plan ahead.

• When travelling to Makkah, if one is in the state of her menses, she will still enter the state of Ihraam, however she will not perform umrah. She will remain in the state of ihraam & abide by the rulings of ihraam . Once her menses have finished, she will perform ghusl (without using any fragranced products, hair removal etc.) & then perform umrah. After performing Qasr (cutting of the hair), she will be out of the state of ihraam.

• If a woman is in a state of ihraam for umrah and her menstruation starts DURING the performance of her umrah tawaaf, then she must leave the Masjid immediately and wait until her menstruation finishes before completing her tawaaf & umrah.

• A Menstruating woman will recite the talbiyah, however it will not be permissible for her to perform the 2 rak’ah of ihraam nor does she need to make up for it.

• If one has already performed one umrah & they are due their menses in the next few hours or days, it is advisable not to enter the state of ihraam to perform another umrah. This is because if after entering the state of ihraam they come on their menses, they will have to wait till they finish their menses to perform umrah.

• If one will be leaving Makkah before her menstruation finishes, then she must contact a scholar/mufti about what to do in her situation.
