The Tahajjud Prayer

“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

•The Tahajjud Salaah is a nafl (optional) Salaah.

•The time for this Salaah is after one has performed Esha Salaah till Subha Sadiq (Fajr beginning time).

•The preferred time for Tahajjud Salaah is after waking up in the last third of the night . This is also a time of acceptance of du’aas. (30 mins before Fajr beginning time would be easier for many).

•It is a common misconception that sleep is a condition for the validity of the Tahajjud Prayers. This is incorrect! One does not need to sleep before performing Tahajjud Salaah.

•One may perform 2-12 raka’at in units of 2 or 4 raka’at.

• The method of performing Tahajjud Salaah is like performing any other Nafl Salaah.

•If one is going to perform Tahajjud Salaah and they are sure that they will not miss it, then it is better to perform the witr prayers of Esha Salaah after Tahajjud Salaah.

•The last portion of the night is when du’aas are accepted. If one struggles to get out of bed to perform Salaah, ask from Allah even from the comfort of your bed. Allah is All-Hearing. That’s how precious these moments are during the last third of the night.

•If a woman is on her menses, she may wake up in the last part of the night, sit on her prayer mat & make du’aa. Inshā’Allāh not only will her needs be fulfilled but she will be rewarded greatly.

• If one has Qadha Salaah, they should complete these before performing Nafl Salaah, as one will be questioned for their missed prayers, as they are compulsory, whereas Nafl prayers are optional. However scholars advise to at least perform a minimum of 2 raka’at when it comes to Tahajjud Salaah due to it’s great virtue.

Du’aa Before Tahajjud Salaah

And during a part of the night, pray Tahajjud beyond what is incumbent on you; maybe your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory.” (Qur’an:Al-Isra’ 17:79)

Abu Hurayra (r.a) reports that the Messenger of Allah was asked, “What prayer is most virtuous, after the obligatory prayers?” He said, “Prayer in the depths of the night.” [Muslim]

Observe the night Prayer; it was the practice of the righteous before you and it brings you closer to your Lord and it is expiation for evil deeds and erases the sins and repels disease from the body.” [At-Tabarani]

There is a certain period of time in the night during which if a Muslim prays for anything beneficial to his life in this world or the next, it will be granted to him. And this time occurs every night.” [Muslim]

The closest Allah gets to his servant is in the last portion of the night. If you possess the ability to be from among those who remember Allah, then become one of them.” [Tirmidhi]

When one third of the night remains our Rabb [Lord], Most High, Most Exalted, descends to the first sky and announces, “Who is there to beseech Me that I may answer his prayer and who is there to seek forgiveness that I may forgive him.’ Then He spreads out His hands [of kindness and mercy] and proclaims, “Who will grant a loan to the One who is neither a destitute or an oppressor.” [Muslim]

Allah ﷻ is free from bodily form and shape. He is Omnipresent and He is not confined to space. Scholars have stated that “Allah ﷻ descending to the first sky” signifies His special Mercy through which He accepts Duas and forgives sins. The loan mentioned in the Hadith refers to bodily and financial devotions offered to Allah ﷻ with the hope of attaining rewards.
