“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
A ma’dhur (excused person) refers to someone experiencing a chronic condition which results in their wudhu breaking continuously. For example urine incontinence , istihada, abnormal discharge, passing of wind, bleeding from a wound, a person with a urine catheter or stoma bag etc.
•A ma’dhur will only have to perform wudhu at the time of each fardh salaah time and that excuse will not break their wudhu. If they experience anything else that breaks wudhu other than that excuse, their wudhu will break. For example, if someone is classed as a ma’dhur due to excessive urine incontinence, this experiencing of urine droplets or leaking will not break their wudhu. However if this person passes wind, their wudhu will break.
•A ma’dhur may pray whatever they wish with that one wudhu in that salaah time. For example, nafl salaah, qadha salaah or Qur’aan.
•As soon as the time for one salaah time ends, the wudhu of a ma’dhur will also break. For example if a ma’dhur did salaah for Dhur, then once Dhur time ends, their wudhu will break and they will have to renew their wudhu for Asr salaah time and so on.
•Wudhu will break when a salaah time ends not when a salaah time enters. Therefore if a person performs wudhu at Fajr, their wudhu will break at sunrise. Now if they perform wudhu after sunrise, the entering of Dhur time will not break the wudhu. Rather they can perform Dhur salaah with the wudhu performed after sunrise.
How to qualify as a Ma’dhur?
1.Firstly, to qualify as a ma’dhur the excuse must remain present for one complete salaah time, to such an extent that a person is not able to perform the four fardh acts of wudu and a fardh salaah without its occurrence.
When a person is in the process of determining whether they qualify as ma’dhur or not, they should delay the salaah till the end time where they only have enough time to do wudhu and salaah.
If the excuse does not last for an entire salaah time, one will not qualify as a Ma’dhur. In other words, if such a time is found wherein salaah could be offered without the excuse occuring, one will not be classed as a ma’dhur.
2. Thereafter, once a person has qualified as a ma’dhur, the excuse only needs to occur once in each subsequent prayer time for one to remain a ma’dhur. It does not have to remain for the whole salaah time.
3. If a complete salaah time passes without the excuse occurring even once, one will no longer remain a ma’dhur. Therefore now, one’s wudhu will only break once they experience that particular excuse or anything else that breaks wudhu. They will not need to renew their wudhu each salaah time.
Note: It is necessary for an excused person, to clean any impurities from one’s body/clothes, if they will remain clean during wudu and salaah. For example, if a woman who is suffering from istihada and has qualified as a ma’dhur can make wudhu and pray before the blood returns, the impurity should be removed before praying. One must try to pray in a clean state as much as possible.
However, if it is likely that the impurity will return before wudhu and salaah are complete, she can pray in that state. It is not necessary for her to change sanitary towels before each unit of prayer; at the beginning of salaah is sufficient.
Similarly, if a person has a urine catheter or stoma bag and the continuous impurity doesn’t allow one enough time to empty the bag or replace the bag before making wudhu and perform salaah then one can perform Salaah in that state and empty the bag when necessary otherwise. If however the urine / excretion is not continuous , then it must be collected and removed before performing salaah.
Example: Saarah suffers from istihada (irregular bleeding) . Every time she performs wudhu for Dhur salaah, before she can even complete the 4 fardh raka’at, her wudhu breaks. Hence she will be classed as a ma’dhur. She will perform wudhu, istinja and change her sanitary towel at the time of Dhur. Her wudhu this will remain till Dhur time ends. The exiting of blood during this salaah time will not break her wudhu. If however, anything else occurs that breaks wudhu, such as she falls asleep, her wudhu will break. Saarah suffered from this problem for 2 days. On the 3rd day however, she did not experience this problem of istihadah for the entire time of Maghrib salaah as her Istihada went from continuous bleeding to occasionally spotting throughout the day. Hence, she will now no longer be classed as a ma’dhur. Her wudhu will only break when she sees blood / spotting or if anything else occurs that will break wudhu.
