بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
Adhaan & Iqamah
•The Adhaan should be called out in the right ear & the Iqamah in the left ear in a moderate tone .
• It is Sunnah for a male to call out the Adhaan & Iqamah. However, if a male is not available then it will be permissible for a female to do so providing that she is not in the state post-natal bleeding.
• It is Mustahab (preferable) to face the Qiblah & give the Adhaan whilst standing.
Abu Raafi’ (r.a) says that he saw Rasulullah ﷺ give adhan in the ear of Hasan the son of Ali (r.a) when Fatima (r.a) gave birth” [Tirmidhi]
Tahneek
•Tahneek is a Sunnah of our Nabi ﷺ.
• Tahneek should be performed on the day of birth. It is preferable but not necessary for it to be done by the most righteous person.
•The first preference to be used for Tahneek is normal dates, then Rutab (fresh dates), then honey and then anything sweet.
•The method of Tahneek is to chew the date into a paste-like substance and then to apply a small amount of that paste onto the baby’s palate.
Nabi ﷺ used to make du’aa for Barakah for the children who were brought to him and do their Tahneek. [Muslim]
Naming Of The Child
•Both the parents should mutually agree on a name with a good meaning. It is preferable to keep a name from the names of Prophets, Sahabas & Sahabiyaat.
• It is also preferable to keep names which are linked to the names of Allah ﷻ like Abdullah / Abdur-Rahman. However in this case to keep for example just “Rahman” will not be permissible. One will have to add “Abdur” which translates as “Servant of”.
• Keeping good names has a good effect on the person as equally as keeping a bad or an unmeaning name will have a bad effect on the person. Hence a child should not be given a non-Muslim name.
• This can be done on the first day or the seventh day or anytime in between. It is not necessary to wait for the seventh day.
Indeed you shall be summoned on the day of Qiyamah, by your names and your father’s names, so keep good names. [Abu Dawood]

Shaving The Head
•The hair on the head of the new-born, boy or girl, should be shaved on the seventh day.
•It is mustahab (recommended ) to give silver in sadaqah to the poor equal to the weight of his or her hair.
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had the ‘Aqiqah for Al-Hasan with one sheep, and said: ‘O Fatimah! Shave his head and give the weight of his hair in silver as charity.’” He said: “So I weighed it, and it was the weight of a Dirham or a bit of a Dirham.” [Tirmidhi]
Aqeeqah
Aqeeqah is a form of Sadqah which saves the child from misfortunes & calamities.
• It is performed on the 7th day after the birth of a child.
• Two sheep / two goats are slaughtered for a male child while one goat / one sheep for a female child.
• If the Aqeeqah was not done on the 7th day, then it should be done on the 14th, 21st 28th or any day in multiples of 7 thereafter.
•If one cannot afford two animals for a male child then they may sacrifice one animal.
•If one has no means to sacrifice even this much, then there is no harm and he would not have to make up for it later.
•One easy method of calculating the seventh day is by taking note of the day on which the child was born, on the following week one day before this will be the seventh day. For example, if the child was born on a Wednesday then the seventh day would be the following week on a Tuesday. •The Aqeeqah meat may be distributed amongst family, friends & the poor, both raw & cooked. It is also permissible to invite family & friends to eat the meat on this joyous occasion. However caution must be taken that the welcoming of a sinless soul is done so in accordance to Shari’ah, in a pure environment. In other words free from music, free mixing, extravagance & show.
Whosoever wishes to slaughter on behalf of his newborn child, should slaughter two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl.(Abu Dawood )
Circumcision
•Circumcision of the boy should be done before he attains maturity.
• Circumcison is a Sunnah al-Mu’akkadah (highly emphasised sunnah).
•The earlier this is done the easier it is on the child.
There are five acts which conform to the pure nature: circumcision, removing the pubic hair, clipping the nails, removing the underarm hair and trimming the moustache’. [Bukhari, Muslim]
