Sa’ee

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

1. Before Sa’ee, return to Al Hajarul Aswad (or in line with it) once again and perform istilaam. This istilaam before sa’ee is mustahab.

2.After the istilaam proceed to Safaa. Climb Safaa until you reach the place from where Ka’bah is visible & make niyyah for sa’ee.

3.Facing Ka’bah, raise both hands up to the shoulders in the way in which hands are raised while making du’aa. Then say three times:

الله اكبر لا إله إلا الله

allaahu akbar laa ilaaha illallaah

“Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity except Allah”.

4. Read durood shareef and make du’aa. Remain engaged in du’aa for quite a long time, for this is a place where du’aa is accepted.

5. Then walk (at normal pace) towards Marwah (the other side). While walking between Safaa and Marwahengage in the remembrance of Allah ﷻ  and make du’aa.

6. Upon reaching the green lights, men must quicken their pace and run slowly until they reach the other set of green lights. Thereafter, they should resume the normal speed of walking till they reach Marwah. Women, however, must walk at their normal pace between the green lights too.

7. On Marwah too, one should go upto such a place from where the Ka’bah is visible. The same actions must be performed as on Safaa. This is one round.

NOTE: Ka’bah is not visible from Marwah, therefore climb Marwah and estimate the direction of Ka’bah.

8. From Marwah proceed towards Safaa in the same manner as described above.

Safaa to Marwa = 1 round

Marwa to safaa = 2 rounds

Complete seven rounds in this manner. The final round will end at Marwah.

9. Then perform two raka’ahs in Al Masjidul Haraam not at Marwa. This is Mustahab (recommended).

Tawaaf must be performed before Sa’ee. Hence as it is not permissible for a menstruating woman to perform Tawaaf, she cannot before the Sa’ee for umrah either.

Ruling No 1: During sa’ee you are not restricted to any specific du’aa. One may make any du’aa they wish. However, it is Sunnah to recite:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ اَنْتَ الْاَعَزُّ الْاَكْرَمْ

Rabbighfir warham antal a’azzul akram

“O my lord, forgive & have mercy. You are the most magestic, the most generous”.

Ruling No 2: It is sunnah to perform Sa’ee straight after performing Tawaaf. If one needs to take a break or rest, then they may do so, however they should bare in mind that they will still be in the state of ihraam.

Ruling No 3: If tawaaf cannot be performed due to menstruation, then sa’ee cannot be performed either. The tawaaf has to come first.

Ruling No 4: One must walk in Sa’ee unless they have a valid excuse such as an ilness or old age, in that case they may use a wheel chair. Tiredness is not a valid excuse.

Ruling No 5: Sa’ee must be commenced from Safaa. If one started the rounds from Marwa, then that round from Marwa to Safaa will not be counted.

Ruling No 6: It is not necessary to be in the state of wudhu whilst performing Sa’ee.
