Rules Concerning Ghusl

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

Ruling No 1: If one remembers that a certain part of their body was left dry, then there is no need to repeat the whole ghusl, simply wash what you have missed out. However if before this they have performed any salaah, they will have to repeat it.

Ruling No 2: If one forgets to put water in their nostrils or gargle then there is no need to repeat the whole ghusl, do it as soon as you remember. However if before this they have performed any salaah, they will have to repeat it.

Ruling No 3: If water does not reach the soft bone part of the nose or inside the ears, ghusl will be incomplete.

Ruling No 4: Make sure to remove any jewellery, bangles, nose studs, earrings ensuring water reaches every single part of the body & nothing is left dry.

Ruling No 5: There are two situations when washing an ear piercing:

1) Washing the ear piercing while wearing an earring. It is necessary for the water to reach the ear piercing. If the earring is preventing water from reaching the ear piercing, then it will be necessary to remove the earring.

2) Washing the ear piercing without wearing an earring. If the water does not reach the ear piercing except with difficulty, then it is not necessary to wash the ear piercing.

Ruling No 6: It is compulsory to make sure that water reaches the foreskin of the private area.

Ruling No 7: If flour gets onto the nails etc & dries, then ghusl will not be complete without removing it.

Ruling No 8: Ghusl will not be complete with nail varnish / ‘breathable nail varnish’ / false nails. One should take extra care with these items as sometimes the nail varnish or glue of the nail does not fully come off.

Ruling No 9: If at the time of doing ghusl, you did not rinse your mouth  thoroughly, instead you drank water in such a way that it reached the entire mouth, then ghusl will complete.

Ruling No 10: Make sure to remove any stickiness from the corner of the eyes, ensuring water reaches there too.

Ruling No 11: If a woman’s hair is braided then it will be sufficient for her to pour water over the head, as long as the water reaches the roots. If the water does not reach the roots of the hair, she will have to undo the braids & ensure water reaches all her hair and the roots.

Note: This ruling is regarding BRAIDS ONLY, not our everyday plaits that are easy to open & redo.

Ruling No 12: Men will have to undo the braids, regardless of whether the water reaches the roots or not. They will have to ensure water reaches every single hair & the roots.

-If one’s husband’s semen releases after ghusl or one’s own semen (for both males & females) before either doing one of the following:

1) Urinating

2) Walking at least 40 steps

3) Sleeping

then one will have to repeat the ghusl.

However, if one of the above three was done and then a person took a bath and thereafter there was a release of semen, it will not be necessary to repeat the bath but Wudhu will break.
