Nafl Salaah

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

Tahyatul-Wudhu

Tahiyatul wudhu is the performing of 2 raka’at nafl prayer after doing wudhu. Whoever prays these with sincerity, that they have no doubts in it, then Allah ﷻ will forgive his past sins.

“There is no Muslim who performs wudu and performs it well and then stands and offers 2 units of prayer with devotion of heart and mind in the two of them, except that Paradise becomes guaranteed for him” [Muslim]

Ishraaq

The number of raka’at to be performed for this salaah are 2 or 4 raka’at. The Mustahab (preferred) method of performing it, is to remain seated in your place of Salaah after Fajr and engage in Dhikr, etc. until sunrise. Then, approximately, 15-20 minutes after sunrise, perform 2-4 raka’at. If a person gets occupied in some worldly activity after the Fajr Salaah, and after sunrise he offers Ishraaq Salat, this will also be permissible although the reward will be less.

He who says Ishraq prayers without fail shall have his lesser sins forgiven even though they may be as numerous as foam specks on the surface of the sea.” [at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]

The Prophet is reported to have said that Allah says, ‘O son of Adam, perform 4 raka’at of Salaah (Ishraaq) in the early part of the day. I shall help you in accomplishing all your responsibilities during the rest of the day.’ [Mishkaat]

‘He who performs Fajr Salat with Jamaat and remains seated in the same place while engaging in Dhikr until after sunrise and thereafter performs 2 raka’at nafl salaah, (Ishraq), he will obtain the reward of one Hajj and one Umrah.’ [at-Tirmidhi]

Chaasht / Dhuah

The Mustahabb (preferred) time of performing Salaatul-Dhuhaa is after 1/4 of the day has passed. From many Ahaadith, we understand that Salaah al-Dhuhaa should be performed after the sun has risen quite high. The scholars are of the opinion that the commencement of the time of Salatul-Dhuhaa is the same as that of Ishraaq (i.e. immediately after sunrise), the Ulama have stated that if due to lack of time, one performs the Salaah of Ishraaq and Dhuhaa together at one time, that too will be correct.

The time for this salaah lasts until zawwal. One may perform 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 raka’at of nafl. The virtue of this salaah is that poverty is removed.

“Whoever prays 12 raka’at for the Duha prayer, Allah will build a golden castle for him in Paradise.”

[Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah]

Awwabeen

After performing the fard and sunnah of Maghrib, one may perform from 6 to a maximum of 20 raka’at nafl, in sets of 2 units.

“Whoever prays, after the Maghrib, 6 raka’at without talking of anything indecent in between them, it would be equivalent to 12 years of worship for him.” [at-Tirmidhi]

“The one who prays twenty rakat after Maghrib- Allah ﷻ  will build for him a house in Paradise.” [Tirmidhi]

Tahajjud

The tahajjud salaah draws a person closer to Allah ﷻ , stops one from sinning & washes away the sins. It is also a time of acceptance for duas.

Tahajjud time starts after you have prayed your isha so you can pray it at any time after that until Subh Sadiq (Fajr beginning time).

The preferred time is to pray it after waking up in the last part of the night.

One may perform 2-12 raka’at.

“There is a certain period of time in the night during which if a Muslim prays for anything beneficial to his life in this world or the next, it will be granted to him. And this time occurs every night.” [Muslim]

The closest Allah ﷻ  gets to his servant is in the last portion of the night. If you possess the ability to be from among those who remember Allah ﷻ , then become one of them.” [Tirmidhi]

“When one third of the night remains our Rabb [Lord], Most High, Most Exalted, descends to the first sky and announces, “Who is there to beseech Me that I may answer his prayer and who is there to seek forgiveness that I may forgive him.’ Then He spreads out His hands [of kindness and mercy] and proclaims, “Who will grant a loan to the One who is neither a destitute or an oppressor.” [Muslim]

Allah ﷻ  is free from bodily form and shape. He is Omnipresenand He is not confined to space. Scholars have stated that “Allah ﷻ  descending to the first sky” signifies His special Mercy through which He accepts Duas and forgives sins.

The loan mentioned in the Hadith refers to bodily and financial devotions offered to Allah ﷻ  with the hope of attaining rewards.

The Prophet has said: ‘O people, spread the salutations, feed the people, keep the ties of kinship, and pray during the night while the others sleep and you will enter Paradise in peace.” [al-Hakim, Ibn Majah, and at-Tirmidhi]

Salaatul Tasbeeh

The Prophet said to his uncle Hadrat Abbas (r.a):

O Abbas! O my uncle! Shall I not give you a gift? Shall I not show you something by means of which Allah ﷻ  will forgive your sins, the first and the last of them, the past and recent, the unintentional and the intentional, the small and huge, the secret and open? Rasulullah  ﷺ  then taught him the Salah al-Tasbih. Then he advised him that it be offered daily, if possible. If not then every Friday or once a month or once a year or at least once in a lifetime. [abu Dawud ‘Salat’ 303; at-Tirmidhi ‘Salat’ 350]

Salatul tasbeeh consists of performing 4 raka’at nafl salaah in which the third kalimah is recited 75 times in each rakaah, making a total of 300 times in 4 raka’at.

Third kalima:

سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَالْحَمْدُ ِللهِ وَلاَ اِلَهَ اِلاََّ اللهُُ وَاللهُُ اََكْبَرْ

Method

  1. AFTER THANAA – BEFORE SURAH FAATIHA: x 15 (AS FOR THE 2nd, 3rd AND 4th RAKAAT, THE TASBEEHS SHOULD BE RECITED BEFORE COMMENCING WITH SURAH FAATIHA)
  2. BEFORE RUKU: x 10
  3. DURING RUKU: x 10
  4. WHILE STANDING – AFTER RISING FROM THE RUKU: x 10
  5. IN THE FIRST SAJDAH: x 10
  6. SITTING POSTURE – BETWEEN BOTH SAJDAS: x 10
  7. IN THE SECOND SAJDAH: x 10

TOTAL PER RAKAAT: 75

TOTAL IN FOUR RAKAATS: 300

•Counting should not be done verbally as this act nullifies the salah. The best way is that the fingers should be kept in their position, but should be pressed one by one for counting.

•This Salah can be offered at any time of the day or night besides the three forbidden times.

•In the ruku, سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيْمْ and in the sajdah, سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الاَعْليَ should be recited before reciting the third kalimah.

•If one missed out all or some tasbeehs in any posture, there will be no need to make sajda sahw (at the end of the salah) to compensate for this omission. However, the omitted amount should be made up for with the next set of tasbeeh in the next posture.

•Surah will be recited after surah Faatihah in each raka’ah.

Salatul Hajah

There is no fixed time for salatul hajah. You can pray it at any time of the day or night, provided it’s not makrooh time

“Whoever, has any need from Allah ﷻ  or anyone of his children, let him make Wudhu and let him make it well, then after two rakaats of Salah, praise Allah and invoice benedictions (Durood) upon the prophet ﷺ & say:

Lā ilāha illallāhul-halīmul-karīm subhānallāhi rabil-a’rshil-a’dhīm al-hamdu lillahi rabil-ā’lamīn asaluka mūjibāti rahmatik wa a’zāima maghfiratik wal-ghanīmata min kulli birr was-salāmata min kulli ithm lā tada’ lī dhamban illā ghafartah wa lā hamman illa farrajtah wa lā hājatan hiya laka ridhan illa qadhaytahā yā arhamar-rāhimīn

Translation: There there no god but Allah the Clement and Wise. There is no god but Allah the High and Mighty. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Tremendous Throne. All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I ask you (O Allah) everything that leads to your mercy, and your tremendous forgiveness, enrichment in all good, and freedom from all sin. Do not leave a sin of mine (O Allah), except that you forgive it, nor any concern except that you create for it an opening, nor any need in which there is your good pleasure except that you fulfill it, O Most Merciful! (Tirmidhi)

Salatul Hajat can be combined with tahajjud as well as with any other nafl like ishraaq, chasht, awwabeen. Basically the aim is to offer some ibadat before begging from Allah, as this would be more closer to making Allah happy and getting assistance from Him.

Salatul Tawbah

If a person does something contrary to the Shariah, he should offer two Raka’at of Nafl Salaat and thereafter repent to Allah ﷻ with full devotion and humility.

He should also express his regret for committing that sin. He should seek forgiveness from Allah ﷻ and make a firm intention that he will not commit that sin in the future. Through the virtue and bounty of Allah ﷻ , that sin will be forgiven.
