بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
Ramadhaan can feel very different during pregnancy, especially if you are suffering from sickness, HG & other health conditions. It’s very common to feel low & that you are not doing enough. This is your reminder that carrying the creation of Allaah ﷻ in itself is a big Ibadaah. As much as you may wish your pregnancy & Ramadhaan did not clash, remember that this too is a form of Allah’s mercy upon you. In fact you should feel blessed to be carrying your child in the holy month of Ramadhaan. Inshā’Allāh your unborn child will benefit from the special blessings that come down in a.
I’ve put together a few simple acts of worship that will Inshā’Allāh allow all pregnant mamas to make the most of Ramadhaan.
1- Never underestimate the power of du’aa!
•Even before Ramadhaan approaches, keep asking Allaah ﷻ to give you the strength to do whatever Ibaadah you usually do or what you intend to do. Towfeeq (ability) comes from Allaah ﷻ alone!
2- Intentions!
•Instead of thinking I can’t do this, make an intention to do what you think you can and even more. Not only will you be rewarded for your intentions, but Inshā’Allāh with sincere du’aa you will be able to act upon them too & multiply your rewards.
3-Fast if you are able to do so.
•Try to fast if you can. Inshā’Allāh your unborn baby will also benefit from the good effects of fasting. If you can’t keep all the fasts then keep whatever you can.
•But if you can’t fast at all, don’t be disheartened. You are excused. This ruling too is from the wisdom of Allaah ﷻ . Just because you can’t fast, doesn’t mean that your Ramadhaan has gone to waste. Eating so that your unborn baby gets all the nutrients etc. it needs is also an act of worship! Managing your sickness or HG also includes exercising Sabr, isn’t that what fasting is all about? Inshā’Allāh you will be rewarded.
4- Connect with the Qur’aan in whatever way you can.
• For some, especially if they are not able to fast they may able to have more energy to recite more Qur’aan. Masha’Allah! See! Another benefit of not being able to fast! Inshā’Allāh this recitation will be extremely beneficial for your unborn baby. If this is the case for you, then definitely make the most of it this Ramadhaan!
•However for others, especially if they are experiencing sickness or HG, reciting the Qur’aan can be a real struggle. But SubhanAllah how merciful is our Allah, that He not only rewards us upon listening to the Qur’aan, but it will also be extremely beneficial for your unborn baby. If all you manage to do is close your eyes & listen to Qur’aan all day whilst surviving sickness or HG, then Alhamdulillah. This too is a form of Ibaadah!
•If you are feeling well enough, try to listen to the tafseer of the Qur’aan by reliable scholars. I highly recommend the tafseer by Mufti Abdur-Rahman Mangera on YouTube (Zamzam Academy). Who knows, perhaps this Ramadhan Allah wanted you to connect with the Qur’aan in a different way than every other Ramadhan. Understanding the Qur’aan is just as important too!
5&6- Dhikr & Du’aa.
• The best thing about dhikr and du’aa is that you don’t even have to move your lips! If you are feeling extremely weak or unwell, use this blessed month to get into the habit of doing dhikr with the heart.
• Do the dhikr of Astagfirullah in abundance and Inshā’Allāh it will bring upon mercy, relief & ease from Allaah ﷻ in all your matters.
•Du’aa is the essence of worship. Make continuous du’aa throughout the whole day, even if it may be in your heart. Pray for your dunya, akhirah, family, friends and the whole ummah. Don’t forget to make du’aa for the rest of your pregnancy, labour, recovery & baby. Du’aas are accepted during the blessed month of Ramadhan.
7-Repent and Self reflect
• As you are entering into a new chapter in your life & with it being the blessed month of Ramadhan, Allah has given you the perfect opportunity to repent & change. Ask forgiveness for your past sins & make a firm intention to never go back to them. Enter motherhood as a new person.
• Never underestimate sitting down and pondering upon all the positive changes you are going to make to your life to become closer to Allaah ﷻ . This is the perfect time. Make as many good intentions as you can!
8-Listen to Islamic lectures
• Listen to Islamic lectures by reliable scholars. There is so much to gain from them. Especially regarding the sins you have made an intention to let go of. Sometimes studying these sins or virtues of certain actions is all you need to give you that little push.
9-Refrain from sins & wasting time
•This is an act of worship that is overlooked & leads to people cancelling out the good deeds they do. This is what Ramadhaan is about- increasing your taqwa! If this is all you manage to do, you will have gained a lot!
•Refrain from scrolling on social media looking at haraam or things that will give you no benefit . This is an easy way to distract yourself from your sickness but instead do something else or go to sleep. Sleeping will Inshā’Allāh give you more energy to get through the day.
10-Getting through the Taraweeh Prayers
The Taraweeh prayers are special prayers which can only be performed during Ramadhaan. They hold many great virtues so no doubt you will not want to miss out on them especially during pregnancy. Below are a few tips to help you complete them:
•Ask Allah for strength
•Don’t overwork yourself throughout the day.
•Don’t overeat at iftaar.
•Pray as early as you can so you are not too tired.
•If you can’t pray standing, pray sitting down with gestures for rukhu & sajdah.
•Snack & drink in between.
•Pray with company if it motivates you.
Remember, this is merely a guide. Everyone’s pregnancy is unique and different. So, go easy on yourself; you might be able to do everything on here, or you might only be able to handle the faraidh. Be content in whatever you manage because, after all, it’s all an ibadah!
