Cutting Nails/ Hair During The First 10 Days Of Dhul Hijjah

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

According to the great majority of Jurists and Scholars, it is Mustahab (recommended, very rewarding, but not compulsory) for one who wishes to do a sacrifice (Qurbani) to refrain from cutting/trimming his hair and nails during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

‘When you see the crescent for Dhul Hijjah and one of you intends to do a sacrifice, then let him withhold from his hair and nails (Abu Dawood, Muslim, Nasaai).

If one hasn’t cut his nails or removed body hair for up to forty days, and by practicing on the above, he will be exceeding the forty day limit, he should not delay. In this case, he is instructed to rather remove the hair/nails etc instead of waiting till after slaughter. This is because Shari’ah instructs us to remove unwanted hair/nails once every forty days.

Anas (r.a) narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ stipulated the time for trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hair, shaving the private parts, that it should not exceed forty days. (Sahih Muslim).
