بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
“In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
Actions that break wudhu:
1. Passing urine / stool/ air or anything from the private areas.
2. For blood to come out from anywhere & FLOW.
3. Vomiting a mouthful.
4. Falling asleep leaning on something or lying down
5. Fainting / becoming unconscious
6. Becoming insane
7. Laughing out loudly in salaah.
Ruling No 1: If one passes wind from the front then wudhu will NOT break.
Ruling No 2: If you see someones satr (the part of the body which needs to be covered) or someone sees your after performing wudhu, then wudhu will not break. However to reveal one’s satr without any need is a sin.
Ruling No 3: If water comes out of a person’s eyes, ears, nipples & navel with pain (due to an illness), wudhu will break.
Ruling No 4: If a person vomits little by little at a time & it equals a mouthful, then wudhu will break.
Ruling No 5: If one becomes so intoxicated that they lose their senses & cannot even walk properly, then wudhu will break.
-If one laughs in salaah in a way that only they hear it themselves, then only their salaah will break. However if one laughs so loudly in salaah, that others around them hear, then wudhu & salaah will break.
Ruling No 6: If one releases MADHI (fluid which releases due to sexual arousal) due to the opposite gender touching them or just by thinking of them, wudhu will break.
Ruling No 7: When the private parts of a couple come in contact with one another (without any barrier such as clothes) wudhu will break.
Ruling No 8: If one sees blood in their saliva, then if the blood is more or equal to the amount of saliva & the colour is more on the red side then wudhu will break.
Ruling Regarding Discharge
If a female is certain that the discharge she is experiencing is produced only in the vagina then such discharge is pure and does not break wudhu. This ruling is applicable on condition that the discharge is clear or white (normal color). If it is mixed with blood or the discharge is due to arousal (madhi) the wudhu will be invalidated.
However, in most cases females are unaware of the exact origin of their discharge (the vagina or the cervix). Therefore wudhu should be renewed before salaah. This is because of the possibility that the discharge may be from the cervix and thus impure.
Hence, in short, any discharge that exits the vaginal opening, whether clear, yellow, or white will break one’s wudhu, regardless of its amount.
If one’s discharge is so severe, that they cannot keep their wudhu for even the fardh raka’at of salaah in an entire time of salah then they would be considered as ma’dhur (excused). As a result, they can make wudhu whenever the time of each Salaah begins and for that entire period of that Salaah time, they will have wudhu and the discharge will not break their wudhu. For example, if one made wudhu in the time of Dhuhr, their wudhu will not break because of this discharge until the end of Dhuhr time. When the time ends, a new wudhu will need to be made that would be valid for Asr and so on. However, if one’s wudhu breaks for any other reason other than this discharge then their wudhu will be broken.
One will also have to remove any discharge from the body / clothes at each salaah time by performing istinja. It would also be a good idea to use panty liners so that the underwear is not soiled. If the impurity (discharge) is smaller than the size of a 50p coin, the prayer will be valid, but disliked if it is not removed. If the amount of discharge is equal to or more than the size of a 50p coin, one must change her undergarments or place a fresh panty liner.
Important rulings regarding the ma’dhur (excused)
- To qualify as a ma’dhur (excused person) the excuse (in this case discharge) must remain present for one complete prayer time, such that a person is not able to perform the four fardh acts of wudu and a fardh salat without its occurrence.
- Once a person has qualified as a ma’dhur (excused person), to remain a ma’dhur, the excuse only needs to occur once in each subsequent prayer time.
- When a complete salah time passes without the excuse occurring even once, one will no longer remain a ma’dhur. Therefore now, one’s wudhu will only break once discharge exits the vagina. They will not need to renew their wudhu each salaah time.
